When you launch Xpadder and see a blank grey screen stating that no gamepad is detected, it usually means Windows has either not initialized the HID driver properly or another application has locked the controller in exclusive mode.
Whether you are using an official Microsoft Xbox Wireless Controller, a Sony PlayStation DualSense, or a generic USB arcade stick, follow this checklist to get Xpadder detecting inputs immediately.
1. Check Windows Native Controller Status (Joy.cpl)
Diagnostic StepBefore debugging Xpadder, verify that Windows itself sees your gamepad hardware:
- Press Win + R on your keyboard to open the Run dialogue.
- Type
joy.cpland press Enter. - The Game Controllers window will appear. Check if your device is listed under "Installed Game Controllers" with status OK.
- Select your controller and click Properties. Move your thumbsticks and press buttons. If the on-screen lights illuminate, your hardware and USB port are working.
If your controller is NOT listed in joy.cpl: Change USB ports (use a motherboard rear port rather than an unpowered front-case hub), or update your Bluetooth adapter driver.
2. Disable Steam Input Exclusive Hooking
Common Conflict #1Steam is the #1 reason Xpadder fails to detect gamepads. Steam's background service hooks any connected controller and converts it into a virtual desktop mouse, preventing Xpadder from accessing the raw DirectInput stream.
- Open Steam → Click Steam in the top left → Settings.
- Go to the Controller tab.
- Turn OFF "Enable Steam Input for Xbox controllers" and "Enable Steam Input for PlayStation controllers".
- Alternatively, exit Steam completely from your Windows system tray before opening Xpadder.
3. Run Xpadder as Administrator
Windows Permission FixWindows 10 and Windows 11 restrict unprivileged background apps from listening to HID polling if a game or system window with elevated rights is active.

4. Switch Between XInput and DirectInput Modes
Many third-party controllers (such as 8BitDo, Logitech F310/F710, and EasySMX) have a physical toggle switch on the back or bottom:
- D (DirectInput): Legacy standard, natively supported by Xpadder.
- X (XInput): Modern Xbox standard. Xpadder 5.7 supports both, but if one mode is unrecognized on your PC, toggle the switch to the opposite position, unplug the USB cable, and re-plug it.
5. Re-scan Controllers in Xpadder
If you plugged in your controller after Xpadder was already running:
- In the top row of Xpadder, click the small controller icon tab.
- If a tab shows a red circle or a blank slot, click on it and select New to initiate a hardware detection scan.
- Press any button or wiggle the left joystick. A button box will highlight in yellow, confirming active communication.
6. Reset Bluetooth Gamepad Pairing
Bluetooth controllers can occasionally desync when Windows wakes from sleep mode:
- Go to Windows Settings → Bluetooth & devices.
- Find your controller (e.g., "Xbox Wireless Controller" or "Wireless Controller").
- Click the three dots → Remove device.
- Put your controller into pairing mode and re-pair. Once paired, launch Xpadder.
7. Use a Fresh Copy of Xpadder v5.7
Older versions of Xpadder (such as v5.3 from 2008) lack the modern USB HID polling routines required for Xbox Series X/S and PS5 DualSense controllers. Version 5.7 includes updated controller detection algorithms.
