How to Map Keyboard & Mouse to Any Gamepad with Xpadder: Complete Walkthrough

Whether you want to play older PC RPGs like The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, classic point-and-click adventure games, or browse the web from your couch, Xpadder allows you to map every single keyboard key, mouse click, and cursor glide directly onto your gamepad.

In this step-by-step masterclass, we will walk you through setting up a controller profile from scratch, configuring smooth mouse emulation, and tuning deadzones to eliminate thumbstick drift.

Prerequisites: Getting Started

Before starting, make sure you have:

  • A connected USB or Bluetooth gamepad (Xbox, PlayStation, or generic PC pad).
  • The official release of Xpadder v5.7 extracted to a user folder (e.g., C:\Xpadder).
  • Configured Windows 7 Compatibility Mode if you are running Windows 11 (see our Windows 11 Setup Guide).

Phase 1: Creating Your Controller Layout

Step 1: Open the Controller Creation Wizard

Click the small controller icon in the top left corner of Xpadder and select New. This opens the layout builder where you define your gamepad's physical inputs.

Step 2: Load a Background Image (Optional but Recommended)

Click the Image tab. You can load a picture of your Xbox or PlayStation controller. This doesn't change functionality, but it makes visualizing button assignments substantially easier!

Step 3: Enable Sticks and D-Pad

Switch to the Sticks tab:

  • Under Stick 1, check Enabled. Follow the on-screen prompt: push your Left Stick LEFT, then UP.
  • Repeat for Stick 2 (Right Stick).
  • Go to the DPad tab → check Enabled → press UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT.

Step 4: Detect Action Buttons & Triggers

Go to the Buttons tab. Press every single button on your controller (A, B, X, Y, LB, RB, Start, Select, Stick clicks). As you press them, squares will appear. Drag the squares onto the corresponding buttons of your controller image. Click OK when done.

Phase 2: Mapping Keyboard Keys and Mouse Movements

1. Mapping Movement (WASD)

  1. Click on the Left Stick icon on the main screen.
  2. Click the small wrench icon next to the stick.
  3. Select the preset "Standard 8-way" or manually assign:
    • Up → W
    • Down → S
    • Left → A
    • Right → D

2. Mapping the Right Stick to Smooth Mouse Control

  • X / Square Button: Map to E (Interact) or R (Reload).

Phase 3: Advanced Features: Turbo Buttons & Toggle Shifts
